August 2009
From TheKCGuy
You may notice a new look around here. I've stopped with the daily updates so that I can help steer you toward some of the larger things going on around Kansas City throughout each month. I'll be updating the front page with August events throughout the month, and then we'll switch over to September.
It may not feel like it yet, but as we work our way through August, summer is ending. There are two big signs of the coming of fall to notice in August. The first is that August is back to school time around Kansas City, which brings along with it lots of kids out walking around in new places for them, and lots of speed traps. Between the speed traps and the new red light cameras that are popping up, this fall may be tough on local drivers. So, watch out while you drive!
The second is the beginning of the Chiefs' season. They play a few pre-season games in August, which always has seemed dreadfully early to me. It's like they're intentionally trying to push away the summer and hurry into fall.
August Events
The Missouri State Fair runs August 13-23rd this year. If you're not interested in heading that far, perhaps the Johnson County Fair would be a better match for you. It runs August 3-8
KCMO and several other spots in Missouri host a tax free weekend for back-to-school shopping starting on the first Friday in August.
KC Airshow is the weekend of August 22 & 23. The planes fly from the downtown (Wheeler) airport on both days. You can show up there to see them and check out the action on the tarmac. There are also many great places to watch this from downtown. One is the West Terrace Park at 8th and Jefferson. Another is actually from the hill just North of the Liberty Memorial. But, wherever you are in town, you'll hear the roar of planes circling downtown. It's pretty fun!
KCPT TV Dinner is the last weekend of August in 2009
Food and Drink
The Well in Waldo is expected to open this month. It's right across 76th from Tanner's and features a pretty large rooftop patio. Keep an eye out for it.
On the other side of the business cycle, it looks like the latest casualty of the recession is UNO's on the Plaza. It's too bad to see them close, but I can't say I'm too surprised. I think that might be the worst location on the Plaza. You're right across the street from a lot of action, but you're down in a ditch so no one remembers that you're there.
Another recently closed restaurant is Yummo, the frozen yogurt place in the Power and Light District. I'm not really surprised, but I hate to see a locally owned joint close up.
Vinino in P&L is apparently closing for a few weeks and may re-open as a slightly different restaurant.
Lawn and Gardening
One great new development in local lawn and gardening news is the availability of re-runs of the Toby Tobin show on your computer. In case you're not up at 6am on Saturdays listening to him, you can catch up throughout the week.
