The Blue Grotto is a new, swanky pizza joint in Brookside. It opened in June 2008.
I was in there the first week or two that they were open and I was excited to have this spot in Brookside. It has a cozy, but modern bar to hang out at, and it opens up into a good sized restaurant in the back, so there's plenty of room for lunch or dinner. The waitstaff said that the bar was staying open pretty late, so I could see grabbing a glass of wine or a martini there as a nightcap. I don't think there's any danger of it stealing much of a crowd from the Brooksider on the same block.
I split a pizza with my date, and she got a salad, too. I was happily surprised to see that the salad was certainly sharable. I stole a few bites and was impressed with the dressing. The pizza was certainly quite good. They come out of their brick pizza oven, which is fun to watch. It was a thinnish pizza with a slightly darkish (but not bured!) brick oven taste that I dig. They have a pretty good selection of pizzas, but the menu says "no substitutions, please". This probably isn't the place that you want to bring the kids soccer team after the game.
When I was back at Blue Grotto in March 2009, I noticed that they had a "stimulus menu" which included some great lunch deals like little flatbread pizzas. If you're not too hungry, you could get by on just one of those, or team it up with one of the salads on the stimulus menu for a cheap, but full-sized lunch. Their updated happy hour deals looked pretty good, too.
I'm excited to have Blue Grotto in Brookside. I'm sure I'll be back there soon!
