Several municipalities in the metro area offer a Citizen Police Academy. These classes, usually held once a week for several months, give participants the opportunity to learn more about the workings of their local police force.

My experience at the Prairie Village Citizen Police Academy

In spring of 2009, I attended the Citizen Police Academy put on by the Prairie Village Police Department.

  • Weeks 1 and 2: hiring and training, and a visit from the Assistant District Attorney
  • Week 3: crimes in progress and Special investigations
  • Week 4: DUI and traffic enforcement
  • Week 5: crime prevention, officer safety, and hostage negotiations
  • Week 6: firearms
  • Week 7: DARE, Student Resource Officers, and Vehicle Operations
  • Week 8: Records and Dispatch
  • Week 9: Investigations
  • Week 10: racial profiling, vehicle stops, citizen complaints
  • Week 11: tour of New Century jail
