September in Kansas City starts out with the KC Irish Fest September 3,4,5. The Liberty Corn Maze is also scheduled to open Labor Day weekend.

The following weekend is Westport Art Fair Sept 10, 11, and 12

Wings over Whiteman airshow is Sept 18 and 19, 2010

The Plaza Art Fair that runs September 24 through September 26 is probably the biggest attraction that Kansas City sees in September.

Also in the last weekend of the year is Strut with your Mutt, a Wayside Waifs fundraiser ball on September 25.

Running pretty much all month is the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, which starts September 4 and runs through October 17. It's always a good time to head out there and eat unhealthy food and check out the old-timey activities like beating each other up with those oversized Q-tips and trying to climb that rope ladder.

Home and Gardening

• A great time for laying down grass seed is around Labor Day weekend. The weather has cooled off enough that the grass can do alright without a lot of competition from weeds. Also, it will be a lot easier for you to keep the seed moist until it sprouts.
• Believe it or not, winter will be here soon. This month is a good time to check the caulking or glazing around your external windows. Also, check the storm windows for proper functionality. Those cool autumn evenings will quickly turn into cold winter nights, and keeping out the drafts is going to make you feel a lot more comfortable.
• This may be the month that you switch over from air conditioning to heating. When you do that, don't forget to replace your furnace air filter. A clean filter collects more debris from the air and helps your furnace run more efficiently. Also, the sooner in the season that you test your furnace, the easier it will be to get it repaired before it gets really cold in case it doesn't start up for you.
