August 27: ComedyCity moving to the Flea Market

Last time I was over at The Flea Market, I saw a sign on the back about comedy. I couldn't quite figure out what was going on there. But now, I've heard more about ComedyCity moving to the Flea Market. That's pretty exciting. I'll have to drop by there soon and check them out.

August 26: 75th Street Brewery's 15th Anniversary

75th Street Brewery anniversary specials

I noticed over at The KC Beer Blog that they're pointing out 75th Street Brewery's 15th Anniversary. There are a few specials this week. I noticed that last week, but I didn't mention them because I couldn't really figure them out. Usually, their specials are for members of their frequent drinking club. I don't know if that's the same case here or not. Then, as I started reading them, I found I was ineligible for most of them. Monday is only for members of their clan. Tuesday is only for cyclists, I guess. Do I have to wear Spandex shorts to get that deal? I don't know what Wednesday's "Throw Up Pricing" is. Thursday appears to be a scam to get me to purchase large, hand-painted bottles. Friday looks appealing, but I don't really know what the special is. I don't know if I can go on Saturday since I'm not a home brewer. Sunday is just an advertisement for that guy that sings in the corner.

I guess I'll just do what I have found myself doing a lot recently. I'll roll over there and fill my growler and get the heck out. At least they're 2 for the price of 1.5 all week long.

August 25: Bulky Item Pickup

I've heard this for a while, but finally received a press release about it the other day. Bulky Item Pickup in Kansas City is changing significantly. Starting in September 2008, you'll have to call ahead to schedule a heavy trash day pickup.

This is going to really change the way some trash pickers and dumpster divers around town operate. You can't just drive around following the monthly schedule and expect to uncover good finds.

August 23: Sales tax free district

I got thinking about sales tax free district that may be created in Kansas City. While that area certainly could use some stimulus to help revitalize it, I'm curious about one aspect of making it sales tax free. One of the other tools that the city can use to spur development is TIF financing, where the increase in sales tax generated by businesses are used to finance bonds that were sold to develop an area. If this area were declared sales tax free for some time, no businesses built there would generate a revenue stream to be able to pay off TIF bonds. Therefore, it seems to me that declaring an area free from sales taxes will also make it ineligible for future TIF financed projects. I hope that's not an unintended and unanticipated consequence of this proposal.

I looked around a bit to see if this question had been addressed before, but was unable to find much. I'm curious if any of you readers know if this question has been raised already. Perhaps the theory is that this area is so unlikely to receive a TIF financed project that this is a small opportunity to lose for the benefits that a tax free district may bring.

August 22: Need for more policing

The tax free district proposed for a part of Kansas City has a great potential to help revitalize an area that needs some help. The Urban Air blog points out the need for more policing in that area in order to help that plan.

In other news, I have not been as lucky selling a lawn mower on craigslist as I was with my motorcycle, so I've put it on ebay. So, if you're interested in buying a lawn mower, please check out my auction. Perhaps I need to wait until spring on this one, though.

August 21: Drop off some household hazardous waste

When I was in Kindergarten, I was sick one day and missed the class field trip to the city dump. I really wished I had gotten to go, and it has depressed me ever since. The other day, I feel that I made up for the omission when I stopped by the Johnson County wastewater treatment plant on Lamar by I35. It was awesome and smelled like raw sewage. Every kid's good time.

I was there to drop off some household hazardous waste and they made the process absolutely painless. I signed up for a time online and slipped by after work. They unloaded all of the undesirable chemicals from my trunk and I was out of there in a few minutes. There is absolutely no reason to throw away hazardous waste or pour it down the drain in Johnson County.

August 20: NuLook

I recently set out to spruce up a bathroom and ran into a bit of a problem. The tile in there had been painted, and it was starting to peel pretty badly. It was really hard to scrape off in the places where it wasn't peeling, though. I wasn't looking to scraping, sanding, and then repainting the tile, and I wasn't sure about painting over it either. I know that paint won't adhere to that ceramic tile very well, especially where water hit it a lot. Since I'm an unabashed cheapskate, I didn't really want to spring for a new tile bathroom.

I found an outfit called NuLook out of Stillwell that will refinish tile. For a completely reasonable price, they came out and refinished the tile so that it looks almost new. Not only was I impressed with the workmanship, but I was also impressed with their service. The job didn't take long, and they came back out a week or so later to do a few touch-ups and make sure I was satisfied with the job. They offered; I didn't have to ask. Since I'm happy with the job that they did, I thought I'd pass along the tip to you. If you need someone to refinish some bathroom tile, or even kitchen surfaces, I recommend you give NuLook a call. And, don't forget to let them know where you heard of them.

In other news, alert reader David Remley (and the KC Beer Blog) have pointed out that Bar Natasha is closing.
August 19: Outwitting squirrels

I have quite a menagerie in my backyard, with tons of rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, and now wolf spiders making their presence known each day. So, I read this recent article about outwitting squirrels with a knowing smirk. I think I may have a secret weapon up my sleeve for next year. I'm considering planting some catnip to draw the neighbors' cats over more often to keep some of the squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits away.
