Jalepenos Mexican in Brookside has been there for longer than I can recall. Sure, it used to be called "Dos Hombres," but I don't think it's changed at all. They offer bland but good Mexican food, which is apparently the perfect combination to allow every member of your family to enjoy it. The place is consistently full of families with young children enjoying large containers of both margaritas and chips and salsa.

The food is pretty darn good, and reasonably priced. I recommend Monday nights with their 2-fer-1 tacos, which can put together a good dinner at a great price, but they have a special just about every night. If you need spicy salsa, don't be shy about asking for it. They have some green stuff that packs a punch. They'll mix it up with the red for some salsa that is tolerable by most humans.

What has always amused me about this place is that when you walk in and negotiate a table with the underage hostess, they announce over a loudspeaker that they need some table set up for however many are in your party. It's as though they are surprised that they have a new customer and need to scramble to set a table. Every other restaurant in the world sets empty tables after they clear them from the previous party so that they're ready for the next. Not Jalapenos. They announce their pride of having another customer to everyone within earshot of the loudspeaker. Plus, to really brag to their neighbors, they have a speaker outside, so if you're walking past Price Chopper you know how many people are being seated at table 14. Now, some people tell me that they do this so that you can have hot chips waiting for you at your table when you sit down. That could be. But, I stand there and wait for them to go get the silverware and chips and then carry it to my table. Then, when the hostess sees that is accomplished, she seats us. I'd rather wait at the table, I think.

Anyway, it's a Brookside institution and serves pretty good Mexican food, so I'll see you there for taco night on Mondays.
